Essential Cooking Supplies For The Great Outdoors

!±8± Essential Cooking Supplies For The Great Outdoors

Cooking outside is quite a challenge and as such you may need a few cooking supplies that are specifically made for outdoor cooking. These utensils need to be sturdy and hardier than those you use inside your home as they will be exposed to outside elements in addition to possible open flame and of course, being toted around with other outdoor gear.

Pots and Skillets

Perhaps the best material for your cooking supplies in regards to pots and skillets is cast iron or aluminum. Cast iron is best over an open flame, is quite hardy and the food cooked in it usually turns out great. Aluminum is best over an open flame as long as you have a grill or grate to set it down on, much like a burner on a stove.

A cast iron Dutch oven should be the first of any cooking supplies you purchase for cooking in the great outdoors. It is versatile and you can cook virtually anything you would in an indoor oven inside one of these large lidded cast iron pots. A cast iron skillet is a great addition to your cooking supplies too as you can also cook virtually anything you want on it.

Utensils

Cooking supplies, particularly utensils, need to be made of metal as plastic can easily become scorched or even melted. Metal utensils will not hurt your cast iron or aluminum pots and skillets and they are easier to clean, particularly when you need to use a steel wool pad for baked on messes.

Tongs and a long fork are important cooking supplies for the outdoors as they will keep your hands from being burned by the heat and flames of a campfire or camp stove. They are easy to manipulate and work best when cooking meats and when you have the need to turn things over without burning yourself.

A flat metal spatula, skewers and both a slotted and solid metal spoon should be added to your list of outdoor cooking supplies. The spatula is an obvious tool for flipping burgers and other food on the grill and skewers are a great way to cook meat and vegetables over an open flame without dirtying up a skillet. The spoons are important for stirring food as well as for the serving part of dinner plus they make a handy shovel when you need to dig a small hole!

Fireproof gloves or flame resistant mitts plus heavy duty aluminum foil are two final important items when purchasing cooking supplies for any outdoor adventure. Having pot holders that are flame resistant is important protection for your hands, particularly when you are cooking outdoors over an open flame. Also, foil is a much needed accessory to any outdoor cooking venture as you can line a grill, create food packets to place on the grill and you can even ball it up and use it to scrape off the grill! Choosing cooking supplies for your outdoor cooking adventures, whether in your backyard or camping should be considered with care and an eye for durability.

Kitchen Appliances - The Kitchen Blender

!±8± Kitchen Appliances - The Kitchen Blender

One of my preferred kitchen appliances is the kitchen blender. They can be utilized to mix ingredients, puree foods, and also can be a food processor, juicer and produce multiple brilliant drink mixes. This may seem original and simple, but this little and authoritarian appliance can be used in very many methods. Here are few steps to pursue if you are looking to buy the best blender brand for your needs.

Brand new blenders will assure performance and also give you assurance that the appliance is in good condition. Buying second hand blenders or previously owned blenders may also be good, but it would be better if you look for brand new products. Second hand ones are also known to exhaust higher amounts of electricity than ones fresh from the box.

Ensure that appropriate usage of the blender is applied perpetually and always clean it after using for a constant performance of your blender. Whether it is a brand new or previously used one, don't forget to let it dry first, before depositing in a closed cupboard.

When purchasing a new kitchen blender online, the best guide is to gander at few of the reviews. This way you will be able to learn about some of the particular components that modify for each one. Choosing the best blender brand will facilitate maximize the potential of caliber and longevity of your kitchen blender. Some of the best blender brands constitute Oster blenders, Braun blenders, and Cuisinart blenders. Speed, endurance, character, and caliber of parts are what these kitchen blenders come equipped with. They are also very handy, you can use them for almost anything you can think of.

Let the NewAir AI-210SS Portable Ice Maker Help You Make Perfect Cocktails For a Great Summer Party

!±8± Let the NewAir AI-210SS Portable Ice Maker Help You Make Perfect Cocktails For a Great Summer Party

With summer here, there's no better time to celebrate the warmer months with cool cocktails in the comfort of your home. Whether it's an after-work happy hour or a weekend soiree you're planning for your backyard, serving up a bevy of perfectly chilled cocktails will definitely let you toast to a season of summertime fun.

When planning a summer party, keep in mind that drinks are often the most important element. In other words, you don't want to be just serving wine or beer. When planning a summer cocktail party, consider the base of the drinks you're going to serve, and don't limit yourself to single spirit drinks. For example, it's always a good idea to have a rum-based drink, vodka-based drink, and of course, the obligatory fruity, frozen summer concoction.

With that in mind, cold drinks require ice, and this is especially important in on-the-rocks beverages, as ice is a major factor in constructing the perfect Tom Collins or Scotch. The best quality and tasting ice either makes or breaks a great drink, and cubes should be shaped in such a way that it does not take up much surface area, as this prevents the drink from "watering down."

Therefore, if you're throwing a summer cocktail party, don't forget to have ample amounts of ice. While your refrigerator's icemaker can provide enough ice for a few glasses of water or ice tea, you may have to seek other methods of obtaining larger amounts of ice. Many people purchase ice from the supermarket or even from ice companies. These companies use state-of-the-art ice making equipment with a reverse-osmosis purification process, and the resulting ice is bagged and made available to customers.

This type of ice most often comes in the form of dry ice, glacier block ice, and cubed ice. Dry ice is carbon dioxide in a frozen state and is ideal for keeping perishables frozen for long periods of time. Because dry ice doesn't melt into water but turns into a gas, they are not used directly in beverages. Glacier block ice comes in large blocks and perfect for camping on ice chests. Cubed ice, on the other hand, is what most people use in their drinks, and these can be purchased in various sized bags and quantities.

However, if you don't want to deal with the issue of buying cubed ice from an ice company, a portable ice maker may be just the solution. These types of units are compact, good for countertop placement, and usually produce ice in minutes without needing to be directly connected to a water line. Instead, bottled or tap water can be poured directly into the icemaker. Furthermore, many portable ice makers can produce ice in different sizes and cube shapes.

Our product team has spent the majority of the summer months testing and reviewing some of the most popular portable ice makers on the market today. Well-known icemaker manufacturers include Franklin Chef, Amcor, Avanti, and Sunpentown, but when NewAir, a company primarily known for its air conditioners and heaters, offered to supply us with their NewAir AI-210SS portable ice maker to try, we were excited to see how it measured up in terms of features when compared to competing units. Here's what we found:

Style and Design:
When we received the AI-210SS icemaker, we really liked its sleek and stylish design. It featured a silver body with black accents that looked great sitting on our kitchen counter. Although it weighed approximately 46 pounds, we could tell it was constructed of heavy duty materials and built to last. This 115 volt icemaker easily plugged into a household outlet, and the front door was easy to open and close. Also included was a removable bin and ice scoop. The LCD screen was bright and easy to read, and we were able to have the unit up and running after just a few minutes. We also appreciated the fact that it even had a "Self-Clean" function.

Ice Making:
According to NewAir, the AI-210SS portable ice maker produces ice in as little as six minutes, and we found this to be true. Twelve pieces of ice per cycle were made in our choice of three different sizes (small, medium, and large), and instead of having to deal with a water line, we simply poured bottled water into the reservoir. In terms of maintenance, when we were done using the AI-210SS, we simply emptied the unused water via the side mounted drain.

Overall Impression:
Overall, we feel the NewAir AI-210SS is the best choice for homeowners that need a compact ice maker. It makes a large amount of ice in a short amount of time and is actually more affordable than other units with similar ice making abilities.

Wheat Grinders - Types, Prices, Usage, Recommendations

!±8± Wheat Grinders - Types, Prices, Usage, Recommendations

If you are anything like me, the idea of buying, let alone actually USING a wheat grinder can be pretty intimidating. I am determined to accumulate a healthy-sized food storage and wheat is going to play a big role in that. I am also a fan of the mantra "store what you eat and eat what you store". Thus it quickly became apparent to me that I needed to do some heavy duty research in order to uncover all the mysteries surrounding "wheat grinders" or "grain mills" as they are officially called. With the help of internet research, some hands on research at several neighbors' houses, and multiple failed attempts in the kitchen, I have come up with a pretty good summary of what you need to know.

Types of Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Pros

Inexpensive Can be used with no power source Small to store
Cons

SLOW to grind (mine took 6 minutes to grind one cup of flour) Except for the very high-end models, you cannot grind a fine flour Inconvenient (messy and hard to fit a large bowl underneath)
KitchenAid Attachments

Pros

Less expensive than an electric grinder Small to store Convenient to use and then mix bread in the same machine
Cons

I have heard from multiple sources that these units will BREAK your KitchenAid mixer Not as fast at grinding as electric grinders
Electric Wheat Grinders

Pros

Grinds very fast Useful for many types of grains, beans, nuts, etc. Easy to select how coarse or fine to grind, and has a large range
Cons

Fairly expensive, even for the lower-end models Must have a generator or battery pack to use with no electricity (unless you buy a high end model that comes with a manual crank) A large appliance to store in your kitchen
Prices of Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Low: -30 models will not grind flour, only coarse corn meal, etc. Not very useful. Medium: -5 is a good price range. Back to Basics Grain Mill is . It can grind fine enough for bread flour but not for very fine cake flour. Wonder Junior is higher-priced at 9 but it can grind into cake flour. High: Up to 0 for the Country Living Grain Mill. It is quicker than other manual grinders and is able to grind a fine cake flour.
KitchenAid Attachments

0-120, some may be used on any stand mixer.
Electric Wheat Grinders

Low: Under 0 for grinders such as the Blendtec Grain Mill. Its drawbacks are it is very noisy and cannot do very coarse grinds. Medium: 0-0 can get you a great grinder. The two most popular electric grinders are the WonderMill and the NutriMill. In my tests I found the WonderMill to be faster, quieter, cleaner, and easier to store. And priced at 9 it is even cheaper than the NutriMill which is 9. High: Over 0 is an unnecessary amount to spend in my opinion. There are heavy duty models out there but you can get the job done with the mid-range models.
How To Use Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Attach wheat grinder to your counter top Place a bowl underneath Pour the wheat in the funnel Turn the crank (for a LONG time) Wheat will filter into the bowl below
Electric Wheat Grinders

Select how fine or coarse you want to grind Turn on the machine Pour the wheat in the top Wait for it to grind into flour (super fast) Turn off the machine and pull out your canister of wheat
How To Use Fresh Ground Whole Wheat

Whole wheat bread can be delicious! I have gone through a lot of recipes trying to find the perfect balance of flavor, nutrition, texture, etc. for my wheat bread. Experiment with different recipes and types of wheat until you find what your family prefers. We liked using hard white wheat in a recipe that included gluten and oatmeal. Pancakes even your kids will love! I took an IHOP corn cakes recipe and simply swapped all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour and it was amazing. My kids ate 3 each at one meal. They are delicious drizzled with honey over top. Whole wheat oatmeal cookies you can't resist. I haven't tried any of these recipes yet but several of my friends said they prefer whole wheat cookies to regular cookies. Who wouldn't want an excuse to make cookies, hey it's rotating your food storage. Much much more. I grind up a large Tupperware full of hard white wheat flour and store it in my freezer (it retains the nutrients that way). Whenever I do any baking I replace half or all of the flour called for with my whole wheat flour. If it is as good or better I add that recipe to my food storage recipe binder. It's a great way to experiment until you find what works for you.
My Recommendations

Emergency-Only Usage

If you are planning to use your food storage and wheat grinder only if an emergency situation arises, it is not worth the expense and hassle of buying and storing an electric grinder. At a minimum you should get the Back to Basics Grain Mill but I would highly recommend splurging for the Wonder Junior.
Every-Day Usage

If you plan to "store what you eat and eat what you store" I highly recommend the WonderMill Grain Mill electric grinder. If you are not planning to find an alternative power source for an emergency situation, then eventually pick up a Back to Basics Grain Mill as well. The price of these two combined are still cheaper than high-end electric grinders that have a manual crank option, and the functionality of the WonderMill is better for frequent usage.

Favorite Cookie Baking Tools and Equipment

!±8± Favorite Cookie Baking Tools and Equipment

Baking homemade cookies is a lot more enjoyable when you have the right tools and equipment. Here's a list of items that will help insure cookie baking success.

Baking Pans and Cookie Sheets: Come in a wide variety of styles and materials. Dark metal pans absorb heat and will cause cookies and brownies to brown more quickly. Shiny metal pans reflect heat making them perfect for more delicate baked treats. Air-cushioned sheets provide extra protection from burning but make it difficult to obtain golden brown cookies. Glass pans carry heat more effectively so your oven temperature needs to be adjusted down 25 degrees when using them. I prefer dull, light colored heavy duty aluminum baking pans. Basic pan sizes you'll want in your collection include:
9 X 13-inch 8-inch square 9-inch square 9-inch round Cookie sheets with or without sides. Although many books suggest rimless pans for baking cookies, I have had great success using rimmed half sheet pans.
Bowls: Small, medium, and large mixing bowls in glass or stainless steel.

Wooden Spoons: Great for stirring brownies batter

Measuring Spoons: One or two sets of graduated spoons designed specifically for measuring

Measuring Cups: A 2-cup glass or plastic one for liquids that has a spout and a set of dry graduated measuring cups

Spatulas: One thin metal spatula for removing cookies from the pan and a couple of plastic spatulas for scraping cookie dough and brownie batter from bowls into baking pans

Whisks: One or two medium to large whisks for mixing both dry and wet ingredients

Ice Cream Scoops: Small ice cream scoops make easy, speedy work of dropping cookie dough onto pans. They're one of my favorite inexpensive cookie making tools

Microplane: A wonderful tool for zesting and grating zest from citrus fruit and chocolate

Silicone baking pan liners: Make clean-up a breeze and are available in a wide variety of sizes. With a silicone liner you are able to forgo greasing cookie sheets too. Just be sure to not cut them.

Parchment Paper: An indispensable aid for quick and easy baking. Available in both rolls and sheets, I bake all my cookies on parchment lined sheets for the easiest clean-up

Wire Racks: For cooing your cookies and brownies

Electric Mixer: I love my KitchenAid mixers, both hand-held and standing versions, for making brownies and cookies. If you only bake occasionally or have limited space, start with one or the other. If you bake a lot, you will eventually want both.

Food Processor: I am a fan of Cuisinart food processors. They can really speed up the process for many kitchen tasks like chopping, grating, shredding, and pureeing. Get one that has at least a 6-cup capacity.
